What is the thyroid?
The thyroid is a very important butterfly shaped gland that is situated on the front of your neck. This gland excretes certain hormones, amongst them the so called T3 (Tri-joodthyronine) and T4 (Thyroxine).
The hormones produced by the thyroid play an important rol in a number of metabolic processes and growth processes in the body.
Thyroid out of balance?
When the production of these hormones is out of balance, you start noticing that by the following symptoms:
- quick gains or losses of body weight not due to changes in diet or exercise
- extreme fatigue or on the contrary overactiveness and restlesness
- weak immunity
- and… hair loss
Especially after pregnancy such an imbalance can occur. The different signs show you that the thyroid either produces too much or too little of a certain hormone.
When in doubt: check it out and go to a doctor to exclude that the above symptoms, including hair loss are due to your thyroid. If there is an imbalance there are several ways to cure it: classical treatment with medicines or surgery, but also changes in diet and the right supplements might offer the help you need.
My own story.
After I gave birth to my daughter, I suffered from extreme weightloss going down to 16% in body fat percentage, making me tired, weak, I hopped from one cold or infection to another and I had a lot of difficulties to concentrate on my work. I also suffered from hair loss, which made me feel very unhappy. Back then I remember I did get a check-up of my thyroid, but according to regular medicine, nothing abnormal was found. It was only years later that I found out that a good balance can be different for every person. So what’s ok for you, might not be ok for me. Unfortunately I was too busy to search for a second or third opinion back then. I just want you to know that you have to check beyond the “normal”, so you don’t have to travel my road.
